What is a Homestead Exemption?
A homestead exemption lowers your taxes by removing a portion of your home’s value from taxation. For example, a home appraised by the tax assessor at $100,000 that has a $25,000 school district exemption will only be taxed on $75,000 as opposed to the full assessed value.
What else you should know:
- The property address on the exemption application and your driver’s license must match.
- Your tax statement will be mailed in October.
- You have until January of the following year to pay your previous year’s taxes without penalty.
- If you have an escrow account set up to pay taxes, it’s your responsibility to make sure the taxes are paid. Follow up with your mortgage service provider to verify that payments have been made.
- Exemptions that may be available:
- Agriculture Land
- Disabled Individual Exemption
- Disabled Veteran Exemption
- General Homestead Exemption

Exemption forms are available through your county’s appraisal district website. The exemptions are subject to the rules and regulations of your county’s central appraisal district’s office. Please be sure to review those:
